A Highlight Reel

A friend needed company after sad news, and I hadn’t a blog post prepared. So I’ve put together highlights of what I’ve liked writing so far, along with commentary and brief summary.

(1) Discoveries in Self-Development — Tuesday, January 3rd, 2023 (link)

Since reading Stephen R. Covey’s The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, I organized my projects by Covey’s Time Management Matrix, which balances the important and urgent by the not important and not urgent.

But something I didn’t consider was balancing projects by an additional set of variables: the things I’m proficient at doing, and the things I’m passionate in doing. I found plenty of things to be “important but not urgent” — what Covey advocates we always put first — but couldn’t determine, rather accept, what I give a bigger contribution in, what I more enjoy.

I was hesitant reading Michael Hyatt’s Free To Focus, so I wrote, but for project management I’m grateful to have. My main gripe is its liberal use of the word “efficient,” which, I believe since reading Covey, is impossible for a human to achieve — only tools can be efficient (pun intended).

(2) On Writing Jokes (or Anything Else) — Tuesday, January 10th, 2023 (link)

It’s nice to breakdown something I do so it may help other people. I’ve planned another post for this Friday that will expand on my writing routine. But I’m proud of this one, in particular, for its applicable-ness to anyone.

(3) Discoveries in Use of the Freedom Compass — Friday, January 6th, 2023 (link)

This is when I applied Free To Focus’s additional variables mentioned in highlight (1) to my day-to-day tasks. Coming to terms with what I want to do and what I’m actually good at feels liberating, and I recommend everyone do the same. But, first, I recommend running projects through Covey’s matrix; then, use Free To Focus’ matrix on what’s deemed important.

Conclusion

This was a neat idea, something I didn’t think about before, making a “greatest hits.” Guess that’ll come with creating a newsletter, eventually.

Wish I could offer something more substantial, but I’m glad to be keeping up with the habit.
